About Lake Naomi

A private, members-first lake community near Pocono Pines, Lake Naomi is known for its pristine water quality and a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere than the region's public lakes. Homes near Lake Naomi tend to sit on generously wooded lots, offering privacy alongside lake access. The surrounding area also happens to sit closest to Camelback Mountain, meaning readers get the benefit of a quiet, private lake setting with genuinely major attractions — skiing, an adventure park, and Pennsylvania's largest outdoor water park — just a short drive away. It's a strong fit for groups who want both privacy where they're staying and plenty to do beyond it. The member-first character of the surrounding community also means development around the shoreline has stayed deliberately low-key, which keeps the lake itself feeling closer to how it looked decades ago than most comparably located Pocono lakes.

The Origin Story

How It Came to Be

Lake Naomi began, like several Pocono lakes, with ice rather than swimming. In September 1895, brothers Frank and Rufus Miller formed the Pocono Spring Water Ice Company and built a 14-foot dam across Tunkhannock Creek, creating the lake primarily to harvest ice — with recreation as a secondary, almost incidental use.

That changed quickly. By 1902, Frank Miller's engineer had platted 330 building lots along the south shore, and a public bathing beach opened the same year; a boathouse followed in 1921 on the site of today's Lake Naomi Clubhouse. The modern private community took shape in 1963, when the Logan Steele family purchased 2,600 acres surrounding the lake and established the member-owned Lake Naomi Club, which today counts roughly 1,400 member families — a private, gated evolution of what started as a 19th-century ice operation.

Camelback Mountain Adventures

Adventure Park Seasonal (Spring–Fall)

Camelback's warm-weather adventure park on the mountain at 243 Resort Drive. Treetop Adventures is a three-level course of about three hours that Camelback bills as Pennsylvania's largest treetop course. There are two ziplines, a 1,000-foot line and a 4,000-foot run, plus the Mountain Coaster, a sled-style ride the rider controls at speeds up to 25 mph with mountain views on the way down. Lower-key options include an 18-hole mini golf course and Sunbowl Tubing, a downhill summer tubing run, and the park also runs the Scenic UTV Tour. Hours vary by day and season, and tickets are sold online. It's an easy half-day stop for a group with mixed appetites for adrenaline.

Kalahari Resorts Indoor Waterpark

Waterpark Year-Round (Indoor)

A 220,000-square-foot, Africa-themed indoor waterpark at Kalahari Resorts in Pocono Manor, open year-round. It has a wave pool, a lazy river, a FlowRider, several children's areas and an adults-only swim-up bar, plus slides such as Barreling Baboon and Anaconda, which add virtual-reality rides, and the Cheetah Race. The attached family entertainment center adds arcade games and other indoor activities, which makes it a useful backup for a rainy or snowy day. Non-guests can buy day passes, which can sell out, so reserve ahead.

Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark

Waterpark Seasonal (Memorial Day–Labor Day)

Pennsylvania's largest outdoor water park, with more than 30 slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river spread across 26 acres at the base of Camelback Mountain. The scale here is the draw — enough slides and attractions that a family or group could spend a full day without repeating a ride — and the wave pool and lazy river offer a lower-key option for guests who'd rather relax than chase thrills. It gets busy on peak summer weekends, so an early arrival helps secure a good spot to set up for the day.

Mount Airy Casino Resort

Casino & Entertainment Year-Round

A full-scale casino resort with table games, slots, a spa, and a concert venue that regularly hosts national touring acts — a change of pace from the region's outdoor-focused attractions. Beyond the gaming floor, the resort's spa and dining options make it a reasonable half-day stop even for guests who don't gamble, and the concert calendar is worth checking ahead of a trip in case a touring act lines up with the visit. It's one of the few indoor, adults-oriented options in the region.

Pocono Raceway

Motorsports Seasonal (Race Weekends, May–July)

A 2.5-mile tri-oval known as "The Tricky Triangle," hosting NASCAR Cup Series race weekends each summer alongside track tours and driving experiences on off-weekends. The track's unusual asymmetric layout, with three distinct turns of different radii and banking, is part of what makes it a favorite among drivers and fans alike, and race weekends bring a full festival atmosphere with camping, vendors, and concerts alongside the racing itself. Off-season track tours and ride-along experiences let non-race-weekend visitors get a taste of the track at speed.

Bushkill Falls

Natural Attraction Seasonal (April–November)

Known as "the Niagara of Pennsylvania," a network of boardwalk trails leads past eight waterfalls, including the dramatic 100-foot Main Falls, ranging from an easy half-mile walk to a two-hour full trail system. The trail system is designed in tiers, so a group can choose a short loop to the Main Falls overlook alone or commit to the full network and see all eight falls in one outing. Well-maintained boardwalks and viewing platforms make most of the shorter routes manageable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels.

Pocono ATVs at Memorytown

Outdoor Recreation Year-Round

A 200-acre guided ATV and UTV off-roading park through wooded Pocono trails, with a full safety briefing and fitted helmet before every tour — open to first-timers as well as experienced riders. Guided tours mean no prior off-roading experience is required, and the mix of trail terrain keeps things interesting without requiring expert-level handling. Multi-passenger UTV options make it accessible to guests who'd rather ride along than drive, which helps when a group has a range of comfort levels with off-road vehicles.

Balloon Chase Adventures

Aerial Tour Year-Round (Weather Permitting)

Sunrise and sunset hot air balloon flights over the Pocono hills from a Moscow, PA launch site, with two- and four-passenger balloon options for a quieter kind of adrenaline than the ground-level activities nearby. Flights typically last about an hour in the air, drifting over the rolling ridgelines and lakes of the region with views unavailable from any trail or overlook, followed by a traditional champagne toast on landing. Weather dependency means flights sometimes need to be rescheduled, so it's worth booking with a flexible day or two around a planned flight.

Daisy Field Farm Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding Year-Round (Sleigh Rides Winter Only)

A family-owned working farm outside White Haven offering guided trail rides across its wooded and open acreage, with routes that pass a sunflower field and range from short scenic loops to longer guided rides. Beyond standard trail rides, the farm runs pony rides for younger visitors, carriage rides, and — once the snow arrives — horse-drawn sleigh rides, so it has an option across most of the year rather than being a single-season stop. Riders should plan ahead: the farm operates by appointment, and there's a minimum age of 8 and a maximum rider weight of 265 lbs.

Pegasus Skydive Center

Skydiving Seasonal (Spring–Fall)

Tandem skydiving over the Poconos from a Saylorsburg drop zone — a verified second option in the area, useful for groups who want a backup date if the primary drop zone books up. First-time jumpers go tandem with a certified instructor, with a freefall from altitude before a several-minute parachute descent back over the Pocono countryside. Weather and wind conditions can affect scheduling, so groups planning a jump around a specific date should build in some flexibility.

Adventure Park Year-Round (Select Courses)

An independent aerial ropes and zip line park in East Stroudsburg with eight courses and more than 90 elements spanning beginner to expert, plus its own 1,000-foot dual racing zip lines reaching speeds up to 30 mph — a genuine alternative to Camelback's adventure park. The color-coded course system lets visitors self-select their comfort level and progress upward as they gain confidence, and the dual racing zip lines add a competitive element that works well for groups. Being independently owned rather than resort-affiliated, it tends to run a bit less crowded than the Camelback option.

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

Living History Farm Farmstead Dates to the 1760s

A 19th-century Pennsylvania German farmstead brought to life by costumed interpreters demonstrating period chores, crafts, and seasonal traditions, including the popular Harvest Festival each autumn. The original farm buildings house live demonstrations of period skills — spinning, blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking — rather than static exhibits, giving visitors a real sense of 19th-century rural Pennsylvania life. The Harvest Festival draws the biggest crowds of the year, but the regular seasonal programming makes it worth a visit any time the farm is open.

It's a smaller, independently run museum rather than a major institution, but a genuinely useful stop for understanding the region's history before it became a vacation destination.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort

27 Holes

Historic Resort

A historic riverside course on an island in the Delaware River, first opened in 1911 and one of the oldest continuously operating golf resorts in the country, with three nine-hole layouts sold in combination. The island setting is genuinely unusual — few courses anywhere are laid out entirely on a river island — and more than a century of continuous operation gives it a deep sense of golf history that's hard to find elsewhere in the region. The three combinable nines mean groups can tailor the round's length to the day.

Resort

Three distinct nine-hole courses — Divide, Fairway, and Orchard — set across rolling Pocono terrain at Split Rock Resort, with sweeping mountain views from several elevated tees. Having three nines to mix and match gives golfers flexibility to play a quicker round or combine courses for a full 18 with varied scenery and difficulty. The resort setting also makes it easy to pair a round with other Split Rock amenities for a fuller day.

Glen Brook Golf Club

Municipal

A publicly owned course dating to the 1920s, valued locally for accessible green fees and a walkable, tree-lined layout through the Cherry Valley. Its municipal status keeps costs noticeably lower than the region's resort courses, without sacrificing much in terms of course quality — mature trees and a traditional layout make it a pleasant, unhurried round. It's a solid choice for a group that wants to golf without booking a premium resort tee time.

Jack Frost National Golf Club

18 Holes

Championship

An 18-hole championship course carved into the mountainside at Jack Frost Mountain, known for dramatic elevation changes and holes routed through native rock outcroppings. The mountain terrain gives the course a genuinely distinctive character compared to typical Pocono golf — expect significant elevation shifts hole to hole and tee shots framed by exposed rock formations rather than flat fairways. It's considered one of the more challenging, memorable rounds in the region and tends to draw serious golfers willing to make the trip specifically for it.

Resort

An 18-hole course at Mount Airy Casino Resort, with modern conditioning and views over the surrounding Pocono ridgeline. As part of a full casino resort, it benefits from newer course maintenance and infrastructure compared to some of the region's older layouts, and pairing a round with the resort's other amenities — dining, the casino floor, the spa — makes it an easy fit for a group with mixed interests for the day.

Pocono Manor Golf Course

Historic Resort

Golf at the historic Pocono Manor Inn dates back over a century, set on rolling grounds beside the resort's landmark stone lodge, with a classic parkland-style layout. The course's age shows in its layout — mature trees, a traditional routing, and a pace that rewards course management over raw distance — in keeping with the historic character of the surrounding resort grounds. It's a good fit for golfers who appreciate a classic, walkable design over a modern, engineered one.

Big Boulder Ski Area

15 Trails

475 ft Vertical 10 Lifts

Pennsylvania's first commercial ski resort, Big Boulder is the more beginner-friendly half of the Jack Frost Big Boulder operation, with a compact 15-trail layout well suited to families and first-timers. The resort's history as the state's original commercial ski slope gives it a foundational role in Pennsylvania skiing, and its more compact, gentler terrain compared to sister resort Jack Frost makes it a natural choice for a family group with mixed skiing experience. Ten lifts keep wait times manageable even without the trail count of the region's larger resorts.

Camelback Mountain Resort

39 Trails

800 ft Vertical 16 Lifts

The Poconos' largest and most complete ski resort, with 39 trails across 166 skiable acres and an 800-foot vertical drop. A high-speed six-pack and detachable quad keep lift lines short even on the busiest weekends, and the trail mix leans heavily beginner and intermediate. Being the region's biggest and most fully built-out resort, it also comes with the most amenities — an adjacent adventure park, waterpark, and full resort village — making it a natural choice for a group that wants skiing plus other activities in one place.

Jack Frost Mountain

21 Trails

475 ft Vertical 10 Lifts

Paired with Big Boulder under the same Vail-owned operation, Jack Frost skews toward intermediate and advanced terrain across 21 trails, with a summit elevation of 2,175 feet and a quieter, more spread-out feel than Camelback. The combination ticket with Big Boulder gives skiers access to two distinct trail systems and difficulty profiles on the same pass, and Jack Frost's generally smaller crowds make for a more relaxed day on the mountain than the region's busier resorts.

700 ft Vertical 9 Lifts

Independent ownership gives it a more personal, community feel than the region's larger corporate-owned resorts, and the well-regarded ski school makes it a strong choice for families teaching kids to ski for the first time. The moderate trail count and vertical drop keep it approachable without feeling limited.

Mountain View Vineyard, Winery, Brewery & Distillery

Winery & Brewery

Few venues in the region combine all three — wine, beer, and spirits — under one roof, which makes it a strong choice for a group with varied drink preferences who don't want to visit multiple stops. The full restaurant and regular live music turn it into a legitimate evening-out destination rather than just a tasting room.

Extensive flight options make it a good stop for a group wanting to sample broadly before committing to bottles.

The brewery's tenure in the region gives it a well-established, reliably good lineup of house beers, and the full restaurant menu means it works as a complete meal stop rather than just a tasting. Its proximity to Camelback makes it a natural apres-ski or post-adventure-park stop for a group already in the area.

Pocono Brewing Company

Brewery

A Swiftwater taproom and restaurant brewing small-batch craft beer on-site, with a full kitchen menu and a patio that stays busy through the warmer months. The combination of on-site brewing and a genuine kitchen menu makes it a reasonable dinner stop as much as a beer destination, and the patio is a popular spot to linger on a warm evening. It's a solid, lower-key alternative to the region's bigger-name breweries.

Tolino Vineyards Stroudsburg

Winery

This is the downtown Stroudsburg tasting room of Tolino Vineyards, a family-owned winery established in 2007 that grows its grapes and makes its wine at its vineyard in Bangor, Northampton County. The wine bar sits on North 7th Street at Courthouse Square, just off Main Street. Tolino's list runs from dry varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio to rosé and sweeter fruit-forward blends, served by the glass, by the bottle or in tasting flights. The bar also pours local craft beer on draft, Pennsylvania spirits and seasonal cocktails, along with sangria and wine slushies. Food is light, centered on cheese plates and chocolate pairings. A seasonal outdoor patio opens in warmer months, and live music nights and special events are scheduled on select dates. It is a convenient stop for a glass of wine before or after dinner downtown.

RAW Urban Winery & Hard Cidery

Winery & Cidery

RAW Urban Winery & Hard Cidery opened on Main Street in downtown Stroudsburg in 2015 and describes itself as the Poconos' first urban winery. It is run by winemaker Matthew, a Stroudsburg native, and his wife Misty, who makes the hard ciders. The wines are made in a Napa style and include Misty Love, an oak-aged Cabernet blend, a Malbec called 98, a Super Tuscan-style blend, Pinot Grigio and Moscato. The small-batch ciders use foraged herbs and organic flowers: Sweet Gypsy is made with hibiscus and honey, and Oaky O'Shea is aged in whiskey barrels and finished with local maple syrup. The wines are vegan and the ciders gluten-free. Wine is served by the glass, the bottle or as a tasting, with cider on tap. The same space runs the RAW Organic Coffee Bar, serving coffee, matcha, chai and mocktails. The Sherman Theater is a short walk away.

The local craft vendor focus makes it a good stop for picking up handmade gifts or seasonal decor.

Pocono Food Truck Festival

Festival

Early October, One Weekend Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

A weekend of graze-your-way-through food trucks, artisan vendors, and live music set against mountain views at Shawnee Mountain — one of the region's most popular fall food festivals. The mountain-resort setting adds scenic value beyond the food itself, and the graze-style format — sampling from multiple trucks rather than committing to one restaurant — suits a group with different tastes who'd rather share a variety of small plates than agree on one meal. Live music throughout the weekend adds to the festival atmosphere.

Gouldsboro State Park

2,800 ac

Monroe/Wayne County Est. 1958

Gouldsboro State Park covers 2,800 acres in Monroe and Wayne counties and is centered on the 250-acre Gouldsboro Lake. The park is named for the village of Gouldsboro, itself named for the financier Jay Gould, whose Erie-Lackawanna rail line parallels the park's eastern boundary and is now part of the Steamtown National Historic Site excursion route between Scranton and Pocono Summit. From about 1900 to 1936, the lake was the site of an active ice industry, and the land was part of the federal Tobyhanna Military Reservation before the state park opened in 1958. The lake holds bass, pickerel, yellow perch, catfish, sunfish, walleyes and crappies. Boating is electric motors only, at slow, no-wake speed, with 50 overnight mooring spaces and boat rentals daily from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. A sand beach is open from late May to mid-September, and an ADA accessible fishing pier and picnic pavilion are available. Snowmobiles are prohibited in the park.

Lehigh Gorge State Park

6,107 ac

Carbon/Luzerne County Est. 1980

Lehigh Gorge State Park covers 6,107 acres along the Lehigh River, from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Francis E. Walter Dam in the north to Jim Thorpe in the south, across Luzerne and Carbon counties. A deep, steep-walled gorge carved by the river, with rock outcroppings and waterfalls, it follows a heavy industrial history: coal-era canals built between 1835 and 1838 were destroyed by flooding in 1862 and replaced by railroads, and the ruins of locks, dams and towpaths are still visible. The 26-mile Lehigh Gorge Trail follows a former railroad line along the river, open to hiking and biking, with bike repair stations at the White Haven, Rockport and Glen Onoko access areas. This stretch of the river is Class III whitewater, popular for rafting, kayaking and canoeing, with river flow controlled at the Francis E. Walter Dam. In winter, the trail from White Haven to Glen Onoko is open to cross-country skiing, and a 15-mile section is open to snowmobiling. The park was established in 1980 and is managed from Hickory Run State Park.
