About Promised Land Lake

Set within Promised Land State Park, this 422-acre lake is surrounded by protected forest, making it one of the most scenic and undeveloped destinations in the region. Hiking trails wrap the shoreline, and the lack of shoreline development keeps the water exceptionally clean. It's a favorite for guests who want the lake experience paired with genuine wilderness. The park's much larger surrounding state-forest buffer means this is one of the least developed destinations in the region, and it also sits closest to the Poconos' best-known waterfalls — Bushkill Falls, Raymondskill Falls, and the Dingmans Falls area — making it a strong pick for a group prioritizing hiking and scenery over lake-town amenities. Stargazing here tends to be noticeably better than at more developed lakes too, thanks to minimal light pollution from the surrounding forest, which is worth keeping in mind for a clear summer night.

The Origin Story

How It Came to Be

Promised Land Lake sits on ground with a long human history before it was ever a lake. Once hunting territory of the Minsi, part of the Lenni Lenape, the land passed through a string of 19th-century timber owners — sold as the 'Promised Land Lots' in 1854, acquired for logging by Dr. Joseph Jones in 1869, and purchased by a Shaker community in 1876 to be cleared for timber.

The lake itself is man-made: an earthen crib dam was first built in 1890 and rebuilt in 1911. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania bought the surrounding land between 1902 and 1904, and Promised Land became the state's fourth state park in 1905 — with more than 370,000 trees planted across the property in the decades that followed, restoring a forest that had been logged nearly bare.

Drink Local

Jam Room Brewing Company

Brewery

Jam Room Brewing Co. is a music-themed brewery and taproom on Creamery Road in Greentown, just off Interstate 84 along Route 507 in the Pocono Lake Region. It was started by five longtime friends who wanted to combine craft beer and live music, and in 2023 the brewery installed a new 10-barrel brewing system. The house list rotates through session ales, a brown ale, IPAs, a lager, a golden ale, a hefeweizen and stouts, along with cider and seasonal collaborations. Food comes from Sound Bites, the restaurant inside the brewery, which serves shareable plates, sandwiches, nachos and mac and cheese, plus a kids' menu. Live performances by local and regional acts are central to the place, and the schedule is posted on the brewery's website. A patio adds outdoor seating in warm weather. It is a practical stop for families and groups in the Lake Wallenpaupack area.

Promised Land State Park

Pike County Est. 1905

Promised Land State Park sits on the Pocono Plateau in Pike County, 1,800 feet above sea level, and covers almost 3,000 acres surrounded by 12,464 acres of Delaware State Forest. The 422-acre Promised Land Lake has about 9 miles of shoreline and the 173-acre Lower Lake has almost 4, with electric-motors-only boating, five boat launches and 170 mooring spaces. Two sand beaches are open from late May to mid-September, with no lifeguards. The park has seven camping areas, 12 rustic Civilian Conservation Corps cabins at the Bear Wallow Cabin Colony, equestrian campsites, and about 50 miles of hiking trails in the park and the surrounding state forest. The Masker Museum is one of the largest Civilian Conservation Corps museums in the Commonwealth, and bald eagles have nested in the park since 1999. The land was once home to the Minsi Tribe of the Wolf Clan of the Lenni Lenape, was clear-cut by 1903, was bought by the Commonwealth from 1902 to 1904 at $0.18 to $2.00 an acre, and became Pennsylvania's fourth state park in 1905. In winter, more than 23 miles of snowmobile trails are open, and skiing and snowshoeing are permitted on all trails.
